◆ What Is the Asakusa Sanja Matsuri?

Asakusa’s Brilliant Early-Summer Tradition
Sanja Matsuri is a traditional festival centered around Asakusa Shrine and its 44 affiliated neighborhoods.
It is held over three days (Friday–Sunday) based on the third Saturday of May each year.
During the festival, approximately 1.8 million visitors gather in Asakusa, making it one of Japan’s largest and most celebrated festivals.
Known as the day when the historic downtown district of Asakusa becomes its most vibrant, Sanja Matsuri is considered one of Tokyo’s signature early-summer events.

◆ Festival Schedule & Highlights

【Day 1】Friday, May 15
The Grand Opening – Where Elegance Meets Tradition

Grand Procession (Daigyoretsu)
A colorful parade featuring traditional geisha-style performers, festival musicians, wooden clappers, binzasara dancers, and regional performers unique to Asakusa.
It marks the official start of the festival and is a popular photo opportunity.

Binzasara Dance Dedication
A sacred traditional performance designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Tokyo.
Based on ancient rice-planting rituals, dancers scatter symbolic “seeds” made of red and white paper while playing the sazara instrument, praying for a good harvest and protection from evil spirits.
Often performed alongside lion dances, it represents prosperity and good health—an iconic ritual of Sanja Matsuri.

Spirit-Transferring Ceremony for Local Mikoshi
A sacred ritual in which divine spirits are placed into neighborhood portable shrines (mikoshi) that will be carried the following day.
The excitement in Asakusa gradually builds from this moment.

【Final Day】Sunday, May 17
The Festival Climax

Miyadashi (7:00 AM–)
The three main mikoshi of Asakusa Shrine dramatically depart the shrine grounds in a powerful and energetic spectacle—one of the most thrilling moments of the festival.

Main Shrine Mikoshi Procession
The three grand mikoshi—Ichinomiya, Ninomiya, and Sannomiya—parade through different areas of Asakusa.
They pass through landmarks such as Senso-ji Temple, Nakamise Street, and Kaminarimon Gate.
Wherever you walk, you will encounter the vibrant energy of the mikoshi.
It is truly the day when Asakusa feels most alive.

Miyairi (Evening–Night)
After sunset, the three mikoshi return to Asakusa Shrine, concluding the three-day festival.
Lantern light blending with the historic streetscape creates an unforgettable and atmospheric scene.

◆ Understanding the Mikoshi (Simple Explanation for Travelers)

On the final day, three main mikoshi from Asakusa Shrine are carried through the neighborhood.
This procession symbolizes the gods touring the community (shinko), allowing local residents to present their district to the deities.

For visitors, just remember three key points:

  • The final day is when the three main mikoshi are carried.

That’s all you need to fully appreciate the festival.
