Experience Japanese Craftsmanship in Asakusa – Make Your Own Food Samples

When you think of Asakusa, famous spots like Kaminarimon Gate, Senso-ji Temple, and Nakamise Street instantly come to mind. This historic district is one of Tokyo’s top destinations, drawing countless visitors from Japan and abroad. But beyond the traditional sights, Asakusa also offers plenty of unique, hands-on cultural activities.
Recently, our team from THE KANZASHI TOKYO ASAKUSA visited the Ganso Shokuhin Sample-ya Kappabashi Store in the Kappabashi Kitchenware Town. Here, you can try your hand at creating “food samples”—a distinctly Japanese art form that’s hugely popular with international tourists.

What Are Food Samples?

Food samples are hyper-realistic models of dishes you’ll often see displayed in restaurant windows in Japan. Traditionally used to showcase menu items, their astonishing detail and beauty have also earned them recognition as works of art.
Many international visitors are amazed, exclaiming, “It looks so real!” As a result, making food samples has become one of Asakusa’s must-try experiences.

Making Food Samples in Kappabashi Kitchenware Town

With over 90 years of history, Ganso Shokuhin Sample-ya is a pioneer in the field. Located about a 10-minute walk from Senso-ji Temple, it sits among the many specialty kitchenware stores of Kappabashi. Inside, you’ll find sushi, ramen, desserts, and other food models so lifelike you’ll want to take a bite. Photography is welcome, and browsing the displays alone is a treat.
Popular workshops include making tempura and lettuce. You’ll use wax to shape each item—a process that feels almost magical. Skilled instructors guide you step-by-step, so even beginners can enjoy the experience with confidence.
Workshop details:
Duration: About 40–90 minutes
Price: From 3,000 yen (tax included) — prices for some menus will change from September 1. Please check the website for details.
Age: Elementary school and above
Booking: Advance reservations required via the website

Our Staff Experience

“The process of dripping wax into water to shape the food was fascinating, and the finished tempura looked so real it could have been served at a restaurant. It was a rare opportunity to experience Asakusa’s culture by creating something with my own hands. Being able to take the finished piece home was a wonderful bonus, making it especially appealing for visitors from overseas.
Interestingly, although the industry shifted from wax to resin in the late 1970s and 80s, the workshops still use wax to let participants feel the traditional techniques firsthand. It was truly a chance to witness craftsmanship passed down through generations.
This activity is fun for all ages, making it perfect for families. Since it’s close to THE KANZASHI TOKYO ASAKUSA, it’s also ideal for a quick stop between sightseeing.”
